Thanks to 350 Colorado and their many co-hosts for including us in the 10th annual Climate Lobby Day! Alongside over 200 other activists, my friends and I heard from an incredible group of speakers, learned how we can get involved politically, and spoke with representatives about how they can better fight climate change. Working with the Junior Ranger program beginning in the summer before my freshman year was my first introduction to climate action, and of course, climate literacy (lol).
By working with the specialized Climate Crew in my second and third seasons, I got to conduct research the impacts of forest thinning on local climates, diving into how human interference can be positive when well-researched, mitigating harm while emulating patterns that occurred in nature before modern urbanization caused us to completely eliminate fires as a natural part of an ecosystem, and allowing for excessive buildup of fuels. Writing a research paper with my crew and getting to share our findings with very influential people from across Boulder's government felt truly impactful in deepening my understanding of climate literacy principles, and began my journey of sharing this understanding and passion with others.
By continuing to apply skills I'd learned from trail and forestry training and work with the Junior Ranger program, TeamWorks has given me the opportunity to steward a greater variety of ecosystems, while being able to see a bigger picture with regards to the end goal of each project. Protecting public spaces from misuse, restoring forest in Eldorado Canyon State Park to sustainable conditions, working on local homes to be more resilient to fire risk in the face of climate change, and many other projects have been incredibly rewarding; as well as the community within and surrounding the program. I will be returning to work with them this coming summer.
I formed a group at my school, initially with the sole purpose of planning the semester's BVSD Climate Resilience Summit. This brought many people together to learn and benefit from each other in showcasing their solutions to local climate issues, and helping their own local ecosystems to thrive. The primary theme of the event was hope, with many people's key takeaways being a reinvigorated sense of personal duty to protect their environment, as well as relief and joy that their are so many opportunities around us for taking measures towards sustainability, and so many youth utilizing them.
The BVSD Climate Resilience Summit is a transformative biannual gathering dedicated to embedding climate action within educational institutions. The summit features dynamic breakout groups and presentations led by various student organizations, showcasing innovative sustainability ideas and climate solutions. Aiming to engage attendees from across Colorado, the event provides insightful discussions and opportunities for involvement. By fostering collaboration and awareness, we strive to empower young leaders to champion sustainability in their communities. Join us in our mission to inspire change and build a resilient future. Be part of a movement that integrates climate consciousness into the heart of education!
